Stuck in the Shallow
Teaching in the urban city in an innovation lab, the book definitely hit home. Stuck in the shallow end the author looks at daily experiences of students and teachers in three Los Angeles public high schools: an overcrowded urban high school, a math and science magnet school, and a well-funded school in an affluent neighborhood. As I was reading this book I must admit that I became very emotional. The book for describes what a lot of teachers in the urban community deal with daily. One of the problems that I think I most identify with in completing my Imagine IT is the lack of resources awarded to the students in my community. As I think about the problem and how it applies to my imagine IT I start to think about ways to solve it. I know that my students will always be at a disadvantage as it applies to resources but as a teacher I have to teach them to persevere. I also have to make sure that I do everything in my power to make sure that my students have access to ever changing technology. I have to reach out to my community for help. I have to build partnerships with businesses that are willing to help my students become successful. I have to also teach my students that they although they don't have the same access to technology as their counterparts they can still be successful individuals and compete globally.
