Desired Outcome:
The main goal of my ImagineIt project is to get students prepared for the 21st century. Students learning and understanding of how the real world works need to go beyond the four walls of the classroom My goals is to facilitate a year long class that requires students working in groups or with a partner. In this class students will rarely work alone on a task. Students need to understand that the jobs that they are preparing for requires that they work a as unit. Students will be working together to solve challenges and produce products. In order to achieve the goal of cooperative grouping we will focus on a few big ideas. What qualities are needed for a team to effective. What are the benefits of working as a team and how would working as a team be beneficial in their everyday life. Classrooms today can no longer rely on a paper pencil test to determine if the students will be successful individuals of society. In today's society everyone from store clerks and astronauts are members of a team and their particular job is essential for completion of a task. Team learning will become apart of every classroom and workplace, work environments and schools alike will begin to function as a "one for all and all for one dynamic".
Often times we walk into classroom where students are sitting in rows and working individually to solve some type of problem. In reality that is not how we effectively function as a class, school or a community. Collaborative learning is essential improving students success and deepen their understanding. Students learn so much more from each other and gain more confidence when contribute to their peers understandings. Preparing students for 21st century global society collaboration is an essential component. According an article produced by An education guide to the 4cs, collaboration is essential to our classroom because it is inherent to the nature of how work is accomplished in our civic and workforce lives. . A half of decade ago most of the work needed for society was accomplished by individuals working alone but in today's society most of the significant work is accomplished in team.
The essentials components of collaboration are shown when students:
* Demonstrates ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse teams
* Exercise flexibility and willingness to be helpful in making necessary compromises to accomplish a common goal
*Assume shared responsibility for collaborative work and value the individual
contribution made by each team member.
Performance of Understanding:
Majority of assessment for my big idea will be formative but would also include summative assessments. My overall plan is to track students’ progress through various projects while they are working cooperatively. Students will complete projects that span over a three to eight week period. Students will be allowed to choose to work on launchers of their choice. In the creative learning lab there are various launchers that students will choose from. Launchers include a variety of activities such as robotics, electrical engineering, alternative energy, circuitry, and computer graphics. Students will be required to complete weekly project portfolio. The portfolio will be used as informal assessment to track students’ progress. The portfolio will include daily reflection in which students will discuss what their group's strengths and obstacles were for that particular day. I will use this portfolio to help me determine students progress and how students are doing working together. The portfolio will be used to provided feedback to students, evaluate their learning and motivate students to discover higher learning. Although students are all working on different launchers my goals is to look at students progress when working collaboratively. I will actively monitor students conversation as I walk around the classroom. I will look for conversations of respect and opportunities for perseverance. I will look for positive interdependence. According to research you'll know when you've succeeded in structuring positive interdependence when students perceive that they "sink or swim together." This can be achieved through mutual goals, division of labor, dividing materials, roles, and by making part of each student's grade dependent on the performance of the rest of the group. The goal is to have group members believe that each person's efforts benefit not only him- or herself, but all group members as well. Throughout the year students will be paired with different individuals for different task. I will be monitoring student collaborative success by how well they work with a variety of individuals, often times student are successful when they work with their friends. Students will be paired with a different person after the complete their launcher, if an effort to have them work with at least 10 different individuals throughout the school year, Students need to understand that in the real world you don't always have a choice of who you work with so in order to be successful in the 21st century you need to be able to work with variety of individuals.
Context:
I am Math and science STEM specialist at Jesse Owens Community Academy and I
co-facilitate a STEM creative learning lab. My key roles are make sure students
Content:
Students will complete a variety of STEM launchers. All of the launchers that students complete include:
*Engaging, hands-on, minds on, project-based activities in STEM, digital communications and related topics
*Applied technology to reinforce academics and build next generation skills*Personalized learning with multiple challenge levels, open-ended activities and opportunities for students to shape and expand learning around their own interests, abilities and learning styles
*Connections to core academic content and alignment to standards
Pedagogy: My ImagineIt project will include a variety approaches:
Journaling: I will use project planners, which is a form of journaling. Students will complete daily reflections of their progress. The benefits of journaling include improving student writing. When students journal their progress they are allowed to write freely, making writing for other subjects easier.
Group Project: All of the launchers that student work on will require them to work as a team or in a group. Group projects can help students develop a host of skills that are increasingly important in the professional world (Caruso & Woolley, 2008; Mannix & Neale, 2005).
Student Centered- Students centered learning teacher students how to think, solve problems, evaluate evidence, analyze arguments and generate hypotheses. These are the skills are essential to becoming successful students and successful adults.
Technology.
The stem lab is a form of a flipped classroom. During class students work on the computers to complete their learning launchers. Students turn in their work either in a google doc or google classroom. Students also use google docs as a form of communication and their project planners are shared as a google document. Students final presentation for their projects are done in the form of technology, students can either use powerpoint, imovie, prezi or a host of other presentation tools to present their project. Students will have to use the computers daily to complete their assignment.
